Sony Pictures is setting Gina Prince-Bythewood to direct Silver & Black, the film that is based on Silver Sable & Black Cat (aka Felicia Hardy) characters from Sony’s Marvel Universe revolving around its signature hero Spider-Man. With this announcement, Prince-Bythewood makes history as the first woman of color to direct a superhero movie! She will rewrite the Silver & Black script originated by Thor: The Dark World scribe Christopher Yost. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing, and Columbia Pictures execs Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing.Aside from Ryan Coogler directing Black Panther, Patty Jenkins who directed Wonder Woman, Lexi Alexander who directed Punisher: War Zone, and Rachel Talalay who directed Tank Girl there’s, a dearth of women and people of color directing studio superhero movies so this announcement is major. The film will team up the Marvel Comics characters Silver Sable, a mercenary who hunts war criminals, and Black Cat, a burglar also known as Felicia Hardy. Both characters were antagonists and allies to Spider-Man. This film will cast up and is meant to follow Venom, the Spider-Man universe expansion film that will star Tom Hardy with Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer directing. Spider-Man: Homecoming, the Jon Watts-directed film that stars Tom Holland as high school student Peter Parker and his superhero alter ego, bows July 7.
Prince-Bythewood is known for classic films such as Love & Basketball, Beyond The Lights, and The Secret Life of Bees. She just directed the pilot for Marvel’s upcoming Cloak & Dagger series on Freeform and completed the first season of Shots Fired, the drama she created with husband Reggie Rock Bythewood. That season finale aired Wednesday on Fox. Prince-Bythewood is also set to direct An Untamed State, an adaptation of Roxane Gay’s debut novel for Fox Searchlight.
We are beyond excited for this news and can’t wait to learn more about the film!
