Afr-I-CAN By: DaPorscha Rufus

Captured and brought from Africa to America
I did not know I was a slave, until I found out that I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do!
BUT, Let US Be Clear, I AM NOT YOUR NEGROE
Because the soul that is within me, no man can degrade.
For these hips have never been enslaved!
They go where they want to go, they do what they want to do.
And even when they kill my body, no man can put my soul in the grave!
For I AM A PHENOMENAL WOMAN that shines in and out in and out in and out of time!
I am Like fine wine in the summer time
whose dreams will not be deferred and dry up like a raisin in the sunshine.
NO! You will not lock me up and throw away the key as if I’m some kind of caged bird that sings…
For I am a free bird that leaps on the back of the skies wings…
So
WHY SHOULD I BE WHITE?
When I Am already Pure.
Created in His Image and in His Likeness, this Truth I reckon for sure.
I AM BEAUTIFUL! I am black AND I am proud AND I WILL SAY IT LOUD!
To some, I am an invisible Man …I am a man of sub-stance,of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids- and I might even be said to possess a mind!
I Am INVISIBLE (INVINCIBLE).. Understand?
Simply because the world refuses to see me as a Black(Wo)Man.
BUT my black skin refuses to be bought with a fixed price, auctioned off or even set at a bargain
But Wo Man did you forget.. I am a  RENAISSANCE,
For now you can just call me…HARLEM!

I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful and profoundly written poem. It touches on so much of what we as black people have endured but have persevered through out it all. And most importantly what we are enduring now and thank God Almighty we will come forth as pure gold.

Honestly I’m lost for words. This is one of “THE MOST POWERFUL POEMS” I have ever read! I just want to start off by saying “God is good” and I’m thankful for Ms. Rufus’s awesome work. But this piece right here is going to really help our generation today and our passed generations see the truth about who we are as people first and not colors. You see I’m not racist by far, but I hate the fact that some many years have been wasted on some bad people trying to destroy certain folks in mankind by hating them for looking different when we all are the same under our skin in ever way and the fact the we share the same air. Ms. Rufus I hope you continue to pour God’s ideas and messages inside. “My goodness if only the Great Harlem Renaissance writers could read this they would be in tears”! Wow! I’m pretty sure they’re reading this in Heaven with God as we speak!
