Dee Rees to Direct Jordan Didion Novel ‘The Last Thing He Wanted’

The film will follow a Washington Post reporter who quits her job at the paper and stumbles into a job as an arms dealer for covert government forces. Variety has the details that the novel was optioned last year by Mudbound producer Cassian Elwes.

Rees comments on the opportunity: “This work is one of my favorite Joan Didion novels and is a brilliant and layered piece of fiction. I am forever attracted to interesting, unexpected characters and Didion is one of the greatest masters of the form. I’m so excited to be able to interpret this literary masterpiece.”

The Last Thing He Wanted will be developed by The Fyzz Facility. The Fyzz Facility is the company behind this summer’s 47 Meters Down. They have first-look rights with Elwes.

In addition to her period drama Mudbound, Rees also has the HBO biopic Bessie and breakout 2011 film Pariah under her belt. We look forward to seeing her work her magic on this new material!
